"Nesar was a real friend. I can still see him in his oversized, droopy wool sweater, that looked like it had been through too many washes. He always wore that sweater, until eventually holes started appearing, and then he wore it even more. I also preferred well-worn sweaters, so maybe that's what made us such good friends. I was not political at all during my five Daily years, so on that level Nesar and I were probably miles apart. Yet he always found the time to walk over to the other side of the Daily office to the darkroom area to see how the photogs were doing." -- Harold Rosenberg

"I never personally knew Peter Allnutt. He was a year or two before my time on the Daily. However, I still vividly remember the Fekete-Allnutt-Fournier affair, as described by Sam. It really caused a stir in the McGill community, and in the English media of that time.

An incident concerning Peter Allnutt comes to mind, something that happened during the planning stages of the '96 Daily Reunion. The planning Kommittee had decided to print a special Reunion issue of the Daily. Arnold Bennett, the editor, wanted to have an "in memoriam" page for former Daily staffers. Peter's name came up at one of the Kommittee meetings, and someone mentioned that they "had heard" that Peter had died a few years earlier. In trying to verify this, all we could come up with were folks who "had heard" that he had died, but no one who had actually been to the funeral, or who could furnish us with a date.

The evening before publication I was still very concerned about the fact that we had no real confirmation of his death. I remember calling Marc Raboy, who passed me on to his wife who was friends with Peter's cousin. I called that cousin (Robert Allnutt) and he told me of Peter's condition and his close call that previous week with the Ste Genevieve fire.

We did not run anything on Peter on the "in memoriam" page. We did print an old photo of him in another section of the Daily. One good thing that turned out from this incident was that a lot of his old Daily friends who "had heard" that he had died were made aware of the true facts. Some said that they would now keep in touch with him through regular visits and correspondance. A family member told me that for years, while Peter was in a convalescent home, one of the people who visited him regularly was Nick Auf der Mar. The night of the Daily Reunion dinner arrangements were made to bring Peter to the event, but that was cancelled when his family said that he was not feeling well enough." -- Harold Rosenberg

Comments: '76 was when we struck a Solomonic balance between leftist politics and pop culture. George Kopp finally made it to editor. We had Larry Black and Rory Clarke and Sasha Cunningham and Andrew Plank, though he and Malcolm Guy were off being Maoists most of the time. The hottest rising talent that year was Joe Rubin. I'm now an education writer-editor and humor columnist in Washington, D.C. -

Pic. bennett-ar-as-1 jpeg is of Arnold Bennett, Larry Black and Craig Toomey.
Arnold is still heavily involved in voluntary work in the Tenant's Rights field in addition to running a company doing technical publishing. Another Dailyite reports recently overhearing in a Montreal courthouse a judge exclaiming 'I don't care what Arnold Bennett says, I want to know what the Law says!' which tells you something. (For those who don't know, Arnold's also a gold mine of tourist info on Montreal restaurants etc. -- Rick H.)
